I recently stumbled upon a study by the University of Michigan which honestly left me shocked
As you can probably guess, I am a big coffee aficionado and love me some coffee throughout the day.
I am even the proud owner of a Keurig, Nespresso & my latest addon the Breville Barista Express.

However, what I discovered after reading this research paper made me realize we are doing it all wrong.

The active ingredient in coffee is caffeine which is the most consumed psychoactive substance in the world.
It stimulates the central nervous system and heart, temporarily warding off drowsiness and restoring alertness. And it does so by blocking the adenosine receptors.
Coffee also contains many antioxidants. Antioxidants are mainly used in our body to fight against free radicals protecting us from many kinds of diseases.
Now, this part is important, Antioxidants combined with caffeine act in a natural nutritional synergy which delivers significate improvement with an average of 513% against baseline consuming just caffeine via pills.
Consuming Caffeine without enough antioxidants is like a fire without wood. There is nothing to drive the burn!
Antioxidants are the delivery vehicle for caffeine. Without antioxidants, we receive only a fraction of what caffeine has to offer.
What the study was aiming to find out is “what is the average amount of antioxidants found in the top sellers of coffee in the United States”, this includes grocery stores coffee as well as popular coffee chains.
They have used organic coffee they have sourced directly from a Colombian farm as the baseline and have tested all the rest of the products for caffeine and antioxidant levels.
The results that came back from these tests were quite astonishing.
Almost all the samples returned with 50% lower levels of antioxidants. Some results even came back with almost non-existent antioxidants (like granular coffee).

Turns out that all this time, we have been getting our caffeine but enjoying a fraction of its benefits.
That is why we always need another cup of coffee…
That is why we have harder caffeine crashes…
